December 30, 2014 the Department of Transportation (DOT) implemented section 403 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. What does that mean exactly? It means that your guitar is now carry-on. More specifically, it means that the DOT requires US Airlines to accept instruments as carry-on or checked baggage on commercial flights, providing certain conditions are met.
Small instruments, such as guitars, violins, and trumpets, can fly as carry-on baggage. Instruments are not given special preference over standard carry-on, at the time you board there needs to be room in the overhead compartment or under the seat for your instrument. To ensure that your instrument can fly in the way you expect the DOT recommends you board with extra time because carry-on space is available on a first come, first serve basis.
